BC government sanctions Chilliwack slaughterhouse over alleged pig abuse, mandates training improvements.

British Columbia's government has sanctioned a Chilliwack slaughterhouse, Johnston's Packers Inc., after anonymous video footage alleged workers were mutilating and injuring conscious pigs. Investigations by the Ministry of Agriculture, the BC SPCA, and the CFIA followed. The government issued a prohibition notice requiring the company to improve electric prod use and animal handling with increased training. Despite the sanctions, no illegal behavior was found. Animal Justice called for more transparency and oversight in the meat processing industry.
