Fire at former Oscar Mayer factory in Somerset causes toxic smoke, prompts resident precautions.

A major fire broke out at the former Oscar Mayer factory in Chard, Somerset, on New Year's Day. Fire crews from Chard and Ilminster used various equipment to fight the blaze, including breathing apparatus and foam jets. Due to toxic smoke, nearby residents were advised to close their windows and doors. The fire, which also affected an outbuilding, continues to be managed by the Devon and Somerset Fire Service.
