RSF reports 54 journalist deaths globally in 2024, with Gaza being the deadliest, sparking ICC complaints.

In 2024, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reported that 54 journalists were killed worldwide while performing their duties, with 18 of these deaths attributed to the Israeli army. Palestine was identified as the most dangerous country for journalists, with the highest death toll over the past five years. RSF filed four complaints with the International Criminal Court over alleged war crimes against journalists by the Israeli army. Meanwhile, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) reported 104 journalist deaths globally, with more than half occurring in Gaza. Israel denies intentionally harming journalists, admitting some were killed in air strikes on military targets. The report also noted an increase in imprisoned journalists worldwide, with China, Myanmar, and Israel having the highest numbers.
