Study links air pollution from fires to over 1.5M annual deaths, mostly in developing nations.

A new study in The Lancet links air pollution from fires to over 1.5 million deaths annually, mostly in developing countries. The research found that between 2000 and 2019, about 450,000 deaths per year were linked to heart disease, while 220,000 were due to respiratory diseases, both caused by fire-related air pollution. The study highlights that 90% of these deaths occur in low and middle-income countries, calling for urgent action to address the issue, especially as climate change intensifies wildfires.
