Lunar samples reveal ancient volcanic activity on the moon's far side, similar to its near side.
Researchers have found evidence of volcanic activity on the moon's far side billions of years ago, similar to the near side, using samples from China's Chang'e-6 mission. Two teams discovered fragments of volcanic rock, with some dating back 2.8 billion years and one piece to 4.2 billion years. This finding confirms previous suggestions of volcanic activity on the far side, which is less explored and has fewer flat, dark plains compared to the near side. Future studies will explore the duration of this volcanic activity.
