In New Zealand, over 2,000 public service jobs were cut between December and June 2024, with nearly 7,000 positions eliminated across the public sector, many of which were vacant. Despite these cuts, the public service workforce grew by 0.7%, and total salary costs increased by 5.3% to $6.5 billion. Average salaries rose by 4.6%, reaching $101,700, surpassing the private sector's 4% increase. The public service represents 1.2% of the population.
