South Dakota ranks 4th for new enrollments in the USDA's Grassland Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) in 2024. The CRP pays landowners to maintain healthy grasslands, which help with carbon dioxide absorption, moisture retention, and wildfire resilience. As of April, approximately 1,800 South Dakota landowners had ongoing CRP contracts with the USDA, covering around 1.48 million acres. Nationwide, this year's 1.44 million acres of grassland enrollments bring the total acres enrolled in all USDA land conservation programs to nearly 27 million acres.
