AUKUS alliance updates security treaty, allowing US/UK exit with one-year notice and indemnifying Australia for nuclear risks.

The AUKUS alliance (U.S., U.K., Australia) has updated the Aukus pact security treaty to allow the U.S. or U.K. to exit the nuclear-powered submarine deal with a one-year notice. The amended agreement requires Australia to indemnify both allies against costs or injuries resulting from nuclear risks. The legal framework for transferring nuclear materials and equipment for Australia's $368 billion acquisition of atomic-powered submarines is outlined in the new documents. The agreement, set to be in force until 2075, ensures the U.S. and U.K. can continue their respective military requirements and naval nuclear propulsion programs. Australia will indemnify the U.S. and U.K. against any liability, loss, or injury arising from nuclear risks related to the program.
