Doxo's 2024 Cost of Bills Index reveals Hawaii as the most expensive US state, with monthly costs 45% above the national average. The average mortgage is $2,576, and the average rent is $1,983. Contrastingly, West Virginia is the least expensive state, with monthly costs 25% below the national average. The average mortgage in West Virginia is $961, and the average rent is $846 a month. West Virginia was also ranked the cheapest state to live in by CNBC's America's Top States for Business Study, allowing companies to pay lower wages than in states with higher living costs.
