Bangladesh's new Chief Justice, Syed Refaat Ahmed, was sworn in on August 11 after the resignation of Obaidul Hassan and five other judges of the apex Appellate Division. The resignations followed protests from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, demanding a revamp of the judiciary. Ahmed was appointed by President Mohammed Shahabuddin and took the oath of office at a ceremony in the Darbar Hall of the president's official residence.
