7-month Alberta moratorium on renewable power approvals led to cancellation of 53 projects.
Alberta's seven-month moratorium on renewable power approvals resulted in 53 wind and solar projects being cancelled and left the province with legal uncertainty, according to a report by clean energy think tank, The Pembina Institute. The moratorium, which aimed to assess the effects of renewable energy projects on agriculture, the environment, municipalities, and "pristine viewscapes," led to 33 of the initial 118 projects notifying the system operator of their intention to proceed being cancelled. The report also found that 20 projects tried to move forward by "clustering" their proposals in hopes of being grandfathered, but these projects have since been cancelled. Alberta's minister of affordability and utilities, Nathan Neudorf, called the report "misinformation."
