21,000-year-old glyptodont fossil suggests humans arrived in South America during Pleistocene era.
A fossilized armored glyptodont, a giant shelled mammal, may provide clues to when humans arrived in South America. A study published in PLOS One suggests that humans arrived at least 21,000 years ago, during the end of the Pleistocene era when the planet experienced dramatic climatic changes. The new fossil fragments support previous research that has gradually pushed back the date of human arrival in South America.
