Researchers have developed a computer system that can predict 73% of rogue waves, five minutes before they occur, using measurements from buoys. This tool could provide advance warnings to ships and offshore platforms, enabling crew to seek shelter, perform emergency shutdowns, or manoeuvre to minimize impacts from approaching rogue waves. The tool, consisting of a neural network, was trained using a dataset of 14 million sea surface elevation samples from buoys near the US and Pacific Islands.
