The FCC implements new rules to cap phone and video call rates for US inmates, aiming to reduce costs and improve accessibility.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has implemented new rules to cap phone and video call rates for 2 million inmates in the US, aiming to reduce costs and improve accessibility for families and friends. The cost of a 15-minute phone call will decrease from up to $11.35 in large jails to 90 cents and from $12.10 in small jails to $1.35. Video call rates will be capped at 11 to 25 cents per minute, a reduction from current prices. The FCC plans to study video call quality issues and expects the changes to save prisoners, friends, families, and inmates approximately $386 million.
