Greens call to remove Lord's Prayer from federal Senate proceedings for a secular parliament.

The Greens have reiterated their call to remove the Lord's Prayer from federal Senate proceedings, arguing for a secular parliament and separation of church and state. Senator Mehreen Faruqi believes the prayer is not representative of the diverse faiths and nationalities in Australia. All Australian parliaments currently feature the Lord's Prayer at the beginning of each sitting day, except for the ACT Legislative Assembly. Since 1995, this has been replaced with an invitation for MPs to "pray or reflect" on their responsibilities. Acting Greens leader Sarah Hanson-Young supports the removal of the Lord's Prayer from parliamentary proceedings.
