UVic professor Paul Hoffman was awarded the Kyoto Prize in Basic Sciences for his contributions to geological research, including his groundbreaking "snowball Earth hypothesis". The Kyoto Prize, considered the Japanese equivalent of the Nobel Prize, is presented to individuals who have made significant contributions in science, technology, arts and philosophy. Hoffman is the first geologist to win the prize and only the third Canadian recipient.
