ACCC orders Telstra and Optus to stop pre-installing Google's software on smartphones due to potential anti-competitive practices.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has instructed Telstra and Optus, two major telecommunications companies in Australia, to cease entering into agreements with Google that paid the companies for pre-installing Google's software on their smartphones. The ACCC warned that these agreements could be anti-competitive and restrict the use of alternative search services. Both companies have signed court-enforceable undertakings not to sign further contracts with Google over pre-installed or default phone services, or to promote one search service over another.
