Queensland, Australia has been named the country's crime capital by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, with nearly 300,000 victims in 2022, experiencing break-ins, thefts, and assaults, leading to a 13% increase in crime victims compared to the previous year. In response, the government appointed Rebecca O'Connor as the state's first Victims' Commissioner with a $18m budget, and an additional $2.97m for supporting the commissioner's functions.
