Researchers at HKU developed a low-cost, portable 0.05 Tesla MRI scanner for low- and middle-income countries.

Researchers at HKU developed a 0.05 Tesla MRI scanner operating on a standard wall power outlet, eliminating the need for radiofrequency or magnetic shielding cages and costly infrastructure. The compact, low-power scanner successfully implemented clinical protocols, making MRI technology accessible in low- and middle-income countries. The innovative scanner uses a permanent magnet, active sensing, and deep learning to address electromagnetic interference signals and was published in Science journal.
