Singapore's resident total fertility rate falls below 1 for the first time due to increasing single women.

Singapore's baby drought is partly due to a rise in the number of women choosing to stay single, leading to a resident total fertility rate (TFR) falling below 1 for the first time in history. A Department of Statistics analysis shows that falling TFR between 2005 and 2023 is due to a decline in married women, offset by slight increases in married women's fertility rate. If more Singaporeans remain unmarried, the TFR is likely to continue falling.
