Minnesota Historical Society returns "Mankato Hanging Rope" to Prairie Island Indian Community, under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.

Minnesota Historical Society will return the "Mankato Hanging Rope," a noose used in the largest mass execution in US history, to the Prairie Island Indian Community. The rope was involved in the hanging of Wicanhpi Wastedanpi, one of 38 Dakota men executed in 1862 following the U.S.-Dakota War. All 11 other federally recognized Dakota tribal nations have expressed support for the return under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
