50% of global rangelands are degraded, threatening food security and the wellbeing of billions, warns the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. Rangelands make up 54% of Earth's land cover, account for one-sixth of global food production, and represent nearly one-third of the planet's carbon reservoir. Issues such as soil erosion, salinization, and biodiversity loss due to overuse, misuse, and climate change are exacerbated by converting rangelands to cropland and urban areas.
