14-21% more rain per degree of warming due to climate change fuels stronger thunderstorms and extreme flooding worldwide.

A hotter atmosphere due to climate change can hold more moisture, but new research suggests this may underestimate the impact on extreme rain and floods. The condensation of water vapour to create rain droplets releases heat, which can fuel stronger thunderstorms and cause more rain - around 14-21% more for each degree of warming. This has contributed to extreme flooding worldwide, including in Brazil, Dubai, and may impact Australia's preparedness.
