Pope Francis has received a petition from the Discalced Carmelites to declare Edith Stein (St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross) a doctor of the Church, with the title "doctor veritatis" or "doctor of truth". If approved, she would become the fifth woman to hold this title, which recognizes a substantial contribution to the Church's theology and moral life. The Vatican Dicastery for the Causes of Saints can now begin the process to grant Stein the title.
