Wild turkey populations have declined in some US states, with researchers pointing to habitat loss as the main reason. Despite recovering from near extinction in the 20th century, turkey numbers have decreased in eight out of 30 states surveyed between 2014 and 2019, with the sharpest declines in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation is investigating the issue and looking for ways to reverse the trend.
