Choctaw artist Jeffrey Gibson becomes first Native American to represent US solo at Venice Biennale.

Choctaw artist Jeffrey Gibson has made history as the first Native American to represent the U.S. solo at the prestigious Venice Biennale, the world's oldest contemporary art show. Gibson's vibrant, colorful paintings and sculptures blend Western modernism with Native American craft, taking over the U.S. pavilion with a celebration of color, pattern and craft. Gibson, a Mississippi Choctaw with Cherokee descent, hopes his participation will inspire greater inclusion of overlooked communities, with the theme of "Stranieri Ovunque - Strangers Everywhere" running in tandem with around 90 national pavilions.
