University of Cambridge professor launches Crowdsourcing Romeyka initiative to document endangered Greek dialect, Romeyka, in Turkey's Trabzon region.
University of Cambridge professor Ioanna Sitaridou launches a crowdsourcing tool to record the endangered Romeyka dialect, a millennia-old Greek variety with links to ancient languages. Romeyka, spoken by around 2,000 people in Turkey's Trabzon region, lacks a writing system and has been passed down orally. The Crowdsourcing Romeyka initiative aims to document the dialect's unique linguistic structures as part of the United Nations' International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032), which seeks to preserve and promote indigenous languages globally.
