The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) did not declare a public health emergency following the fiery train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio in February 2023. Despite the disaster forcing the evacuation of half the town and generating fears about long-term health consequences of the spilled and burned chemicals, the EPA determined that widespread health problems and ongoing chemical exposures have not been documented. The decision was based on the agency's tests that have not shown ongoing chemical exposure.
