Quebec provincial police investigate a shrimp processing plant fire in Matane, leading to local evacuation and plant closure due to lack of workers and raw materials.
Quebec provincial police are investigating a fire that destroyed a shrimp processing plant in Matane, northeast of Quebec City, after the plant's owner announced its closure due to a lack of foreign workers and decreasing supply of raw materials. The plant contained ammonia, a refrigeration chemical, which led to a local evacuation. The fire is being investigated by the major crimes unit of the provincial police force. Matane Mayor Eddy Métivier called the plant's closure a "catastrophe" for the local fishing industry.
