NZ Transport Agency and partners agree on alternative delivery model for Lower Hutt's Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi program, with enhanced flood defences expected by 2028.

The NZ Transport Agency, Greater Wellington, Hutt City Council, iwi Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika, and Ngāti Toa Rangatira have agreed on an alternative delivery model for parts of the Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi (formerly RiverLink) programme in Lower Hutt. The partners, working under the Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi Alliance, aim to improve flood protection, ecological health of the river, transport options, and city centre. Some components, like most river works, stopbanks, and streetscape works, will be delivered outside the current alliance model, with the Hutt City Council taking over certain aspects in-house. The enhanced Lower Hutt flood defences are estimated to be completed by 2028.
