Scientists discover new yeast species, Kazachstania weizmannii, with potential to prevent invasive candidiasis by competing with C. albicans.
Scientists at the Weizmann Institute of Science discovered a new yeast species, Kazachstania weizmannii, that may help prevent invasive candidiasis, a deadly fungal infection affecting hospitalized and immunocompromised patients. Kazachstania weizmannii lives harmlessly in the intestines of mice and humans and can displace Candida albicans, the yeast responsible for candidiasis. Its competition with C. albicans could have potential therapeutic value for managing C. albicans-mediated diseases.
