Prince Edward became the Duke of Edinburgh after King Charles III ascended the throne.
Prince Edward and wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, shared a close bond with the late Queen, who offered Edward a Dukedom before Charles ascended the throne. The Queen had initially planned to give Edward his late father's title, Duke of Edinburgh, but Edward declined and opted for the title Earl of Wessex. When King Charles III took the throne, he later bestowed the Duke of Edinburgh title upon his brother.
