BC woman and man barred from US penny stock market challenge province's unexplained wealth order applications in court, claiming constitutional violation.
A B.C. woman and a man barred from the U.S. penny stock market are challenging the province's unexplained wealth order applications in court, claiming they violate Charter rights. The BC Office of Civil Forfeiture faces claims that its applications for unexplained wealth orders (UWOs) are unconstitutional. UWOs compel targets to disclose the source of their funds to the director. The cases follow the amendment of the B.C. Civil Forfeiture Act to include UWOs in March 2023.
