Massachusetts and Rhode Island are considering legislation to legalize human composting, also known as natural organic reduction or soil transformation, as a more environmentally friendly alternative to cremation. The process takes 30-45 days and turns human remains into nutrient-rich soil. Seven states have already legalized the practice, which is part of an effort to find more sustainable burial options.
