Millennials surpass baby boomers as Canada's largest age group due to higher immigration and a decline in average age.

Statistics Canada reports that millennials have overtaken baby boomers as the largest age group in Canada, ending the post-WWII generation's 65-year reign as the largest cohort in the population. The federal agency's population estimate for July 1, 2023, showed that higher immigration, including a recent influx of foreign students and temporary workers, has contributed to a decline in the average age in Canada. The number of people aged 65 and older continues to rise, but the share of millennials and generation Z is increasing while that of baby boomers and generation X is decreasing. This shift has helped increase the share of the working-age population.
