A 5-year-old Venezuelan boy died at a Chicago migrant shelter from sepsis.

A 5-year-old Venezuelan boy named Jean Carlos Martinez died from sepsis and a bacterial infection related to strep throat at a migrant shelter in Chicago on December 17. The boy had been staying at a warehouse retrofitted as a shelter in the city's Pilsen neighborhood. Around 2,300 people were living at the shelter. The shelter staff provided first aid, including chest compressions, but Martinez Rivero later died at Comer Children's Hospital. Contributing factors to his death included COVID-19, adenovirus, and rhinovirus. His death has raised concerns about conditions at shelters and how Chicago is responding to an influx of people unaccustomed to the city's cold winters and with few local contacts.
