Canada's lack of trade, diplomacy, and investment in Africa leads to "friend-zoning".

Experts have warned that Canada is risking its relevance in Africa due to a lack of engagement in trade, diplomacy, and investment on the continent. As Africa’s population is projected to nearly double by 2050, Canada is falling behind other countries and emerging states in setting strategies for trade and development with Africa. The World Bank has said that a potential continental free-trade deal could lift 30 million people out of extreme poverty and inject $3.4 trillion into African economies. However, Africa needs better governance, large infrastructure projects, and debt restructuring. To maintain a strong relationship with Africa, experts suggest Canada must focus on fostering partnerships and understanding the needs and goals of African countries.
