White-naped crane Walnut, who became the subject of internet fame and inspired love songs, has passed away at age 42. Walnut fell for her keeper, Chris Crowe, at the Smithsonian's National Zoo, and the pair shared a bond for nearly 20 years. The crane was hand-raised by people and bonded with her human caretakers, having been rescued by the International Crane Foundation after her parents were brought to the U.S. illegally.
