Tensions in the area increased after an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon claimed the life of a Hezbollah commander.

Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group, has claimed the death of one of its commanders, Wissam Tawil, in a strike in southern Lebanon. Tawil, a member of the elite Radwan Force, is one of the most prominent figures killed in the current violence. Israel's military did not comment on the incident, but it stated it had hit Hezbollah targets in response to cross-border attacks. The clashes have raised fears of a wider regional conflict. Hezbollah is an Iran-backed group with considerable military and political power in Lebanon and is designated as a terrorist organization by Israel, the UK, and other Western powers. Its fighters have exchanged fire with Israeli forces daily along the border since the start of the war between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas in the Gaza Strip on 7 October.
