At the end of this year, the president of the European Council will resign and take a seat in the European Parliament.
EU Council President Charles Michel announced his intention to participate in the elections to the European Parliament, which will be held in July 2024. Michel will carry out his current duties until he is sworn in as a Member of Parliament on July 16. If the EU countries do not have time to agree on a new candidate for this post, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban can act as head of the European Council since the country will preside over the EU Council during this period.
