Country singer David Allan Coe dies at age 86.
David Allan Coe, the country singer-songwriter best known for writing the working-class anthem “Take This Job and Shove It,” has died at age 86. His wife, Kimberly Hastings Coe, confirmed his passing, describing him as a gifted artist and lifelong companion. A central figure in the outlaw country movement, Coe had a tumultuous past including time in reformatories and prison, which influenced his raw and controversial music. He wrote hits recorded by major artists like Johnny Paycheck and Tanya Tucker, and was the first to record “Tennessee Whiskey.” Despite controversy over some of his work, he performed with legends like Willie Nelson and Kid Rock. In 2016, he was ordered to pay over $980,000 in restitution for tax evasion and received three years’ probation. Coe had been hospitalized with COVID-19 in 2021 and made few public appearances afterward.
