Cardinal Ernest Simoni meets Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican to share relics of Albanian martyrs.
Cardinal Ernest Simoni, a 97-year-old Albanian priest known as a "living martyr" for enduring 18 years in prison and forced labor under a communist regime, met privately with Pope Leo XIV on April 26 at the Vatican.
Ordained in 1956, Simoni secretly celebrated Mass in Latin during imprisonment and continued his ministry clandestinely until the regime fell in 1990.
In 2016, Pope Francis elevated him to the cardinalate.
During the audience, he presented the pope with a cross and relics of Albanian martyrs, emphasizing their sacrifice for faith and the salvation of their people.
