New Zealand military plane detects suspected illicit ship transfers while enforcing UN sanctions on North Korea.
New Zealand’s military reported that a P-8A Poseidon aircraft observed a possible ship-to-ship transfer of illicit goods in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea during patrols to enforce United Nations sanctions on North Korea.
The mission, part of a US-led coalition, identified 35 vessels of interest and focused on disrupting the smuggling of refined petroleum and the export of coal, iron ore, and sand.
Despite New Zealand’s efforts to uphold international law, China recently lodged a formal protest, accusing the aircraft of conducting "close-in reconnaissance and harassment" in its airspace.
