UK exempts cars over 40 years old from tax starting April 2026.
Starting April 2026, vehicles over 40 years old in the UK will no longer pay vehicle tax, applying to millions of popular older models like the Ford Sierra, Vauxhall Astra, and Austin Montego.
Owners must reclassify these as "historic" cars with the DVLA to claim the exemption, which also waives MOT testing if the vehicle remains unaltered.
This change comes amid concerns that high taxes on slightly newer cars force owners to scrap functional vehicles, but the Treasury has confirmed no plans to reduce taxes for vehicles aged 20 to 39.
