Ontario fines former mortgage brokers Harold and Esther Gerstel $210,000 for operating an unlicensed scheme.
Former Toronto mortgage broker Harold Gerstel and his wife Esther were fined $210,000 by Ontario’s Financial Services Tribunal over allegations of operating an unlicensed mortgage scheme.
The regulator accused them of using a licensed brokerage to attract vulnerable borrowers with promises of quick loans, then funneling them to an unlicensed company that charged extremely high interest rates, some up to 56%, and failed to provide required consumer protections.
While the Gerstels deny any wrongdoing and plan to appeal, the tribunal ruled the scheme caused significant financial harm to several borrowers, some of whom lost their homes.
