Irish MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú criticized Ireland’s traditional toll booths as outdated and inefficient, causing traffic delays, accidents, and significant fuel waste. She estimated €26 million in diesel costs annually for heavy goods vehicles and noted Ireland lags behind other EU nations that use free-flow systems. Ní Mhurchú said she may propose EU legislation to mandate the transition to electronic tolling.
