Invasive hammerhead worms spotted in Ontario communities.
Hammerhead worms, invasive and carnivorous, have been spotted in multiple Ontario communities this spring.
Growing up to 10 centimeters long, these worms secrete a neurotoxin that can irritate skin and eyes and harm pets if ingested.
Experts advise against touching them and recommend collecting them with a shovel or covered hands to place in soapy water or a vinegar solution before disposing of them.
Because they can regenerate from cut pieces, mechanical destruction is ineffective.
Residents are urged to report sightings to the province’s invasive species hotline.
