Hungarian officials arrested drug trafficker János Balla in Mexico.
Mexican authorities have arrested János Balla, a suspected drug trafficker wanted by the European Union, in Quintana Roo.
The 48-year-old, who used the alias “Daniel Takacs,” was detained following intelligence cooperation with Hungarian officials and an Interpol red notice.
Balla faces a six-year sentence for drug smuggling and is currently in the custody of Mexico’s National Institute of Migration for deportation.
The arrest is part of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s intensified crackdown on organized crime, responding to pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Mexico has also transferred nearly 92 suspected cartel members to the U.S. since Trump’s 2025 re-election, though critics argue these transfers violate due process.
