Gratis police officers visited Cincinnati schools for immigrant welfare checks, but district rejected request and ICE said officers lacked federal authority.
Two Gratis, Ohio police officers visited three Cincinnati Public Schools claiming to conduct unaccompanied immigrant child welfare checks, but the district rejected their request and said no students were contacted.
While Gratis Police Chief Tonina Lamanna stated the visit was not enforcement, ICE clarified that the officers were not federal agents and did not have legal authority in Hamilton County.
The incident has prompted an investigation and an emergency village meeting regarding the officers' conduct.
