Dr. Thornton signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 after arriving in Philadelphia.
Dr. Matthew Thornton, born in 1714 in Northern Ireland, was the last delegate to sign the Declaration of Independence.
He arrived in Philadelphia in November 1776 after missing the initial signing, famously insisting on adding his name and stating he wanted the "privilege to be hanged for patriotism."
Thornton also helped draft New Hampshire's constitution, the first in the colonies, and served as a physician, militia officer, and state official before dying in 1803.
